This 21-year-old son of an electrician and manicurist has inspired many people when he achieved his dream of becoming a licensed electrical engineer.
But what makes his success even more impressive is that he was also concluded as one of the board exam topnotchers in the September 2019 Electrical Engineer Licensure Examination.
Last Friday, September 6, the official result for the electrical engineering board exam was already out, but Gerald Mier still can’t believe that he landed in the top 2, with a score of 92.05%.
In an exclusive interview with ABS-CBN News, the young man said that although he is somehow confident that he could pass the said board exams, he didn’t really expect to be in the 2nd spot.
“Ang alam ko lang makakapasa ako pero ‘yung mag-top, hindi ko ini-expect kasi talagang mahirap ang exam,” he said.
He even added that during his review center days, financial problems still get in the way, but this didn’t stop him in pursuing his dream.
Meanwhile, Gerald’s older sister, April Mier-Manjares wrote a post on her Facebook account, where she shared the challenges and sacrifices that their youngest brother faced before passing the board exam and becoming a licensed electrical engineer.
“Nairaos ang review sa Manila na halos linggo-linggo nagte-text na barya na lang ang nasa wallet niya. Salamat at nadudugtungan naman ng acapera, sweldo ng mga ate, at smart padala ni mama at papa,” she wrote.
It was also included in her post that Gerald was a consistent dean’s lister in college and graduated cum laude from Bicol University – Legazpi. He is also a DOST scholar (Department of Science and Technology).
With his hardworking parents served as his inspiration in life, especially his electrician father, who inspired him to take his course.
Gerald’s mother, on the other hand, is working as a manicurist or those who provide services that involve grooming of the nails of the feet and hands. That’s why when they received the good news that their son passed the board exams, they became very emotional. According to them, it’s already a bonus that he ranked second place.
Now that he finally achieved one of his dreams in life, Gerald is already looking forward to sharing this success with his family and he also promised to give his best to repay his parents’ sacrifices and hard work.
