The Filipino boxing champion and Senator Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao had won his recent bout against American boxer Keith Thurman in the WBA welterweight title last July 20.
But aside from bringing another big pride to the country, Manny also dedicated this fight for ALS awareness or those who had Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.
With that, the white boxing trunks which Manny Pacquiao wore during the PacThurman fight was recently auctioned and sold for a charity cause.
Last Thursday, August 1, Charity Buzz and “Jimmy Kimmel Live” held the auction for the Filipino boxing icon’s white trunks and was able to raise the bid up to $24,750 or approximately P1.3 million.
The proceeds of the auction will go to non-profit organizations fighting against Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis or also known as motor neurone disease (MND) or Lou Gehrig’s disease, is a specific disease that causes the death of neurons controlling voluntary muscles. The word A-myo-trophic comes from the Greek language. “A” means no. “Myo” refers to muscle, and “Trophic” means nourishment – “No muscle nourishment.”
Prior to his fight, Manny said in a Twitter post dated July 19, that he is dedicating his fight with Thurman for ALS awareness.
He wrote on Twitter: I am dedicating my fight against @KeithFThurmanJr to my friend and to ALS awareness. I will share more on this next week.
Now at 40, Manny holds the record to become the oldest man to win the welterweight world title.
Over the years, Manny Pacquiao is known for his generosity and willingness to help out nearly anyone who asks. He even ventured into the world of politics as a Philippine Senator to extend more help through public service. Aside from that, Manny also established numerous housing projects, scholarship programs, and charity foundations here and abroad.
For all of his fight and winnings, Manny never forgets to share his boxing fortune towards the needy people, which makes him the champion not only inside the boxing ring but also in the hearts of many Filipinos!
