In the Philippines, poverty has always remained a critical social problem that needs to be addressed as this situation prevents many children from getting a basic education.
But thanks to the help of scholarship programs and other organizations, a lot of Filipino students are able to improve their lives through education.
One of them is a member of the Mangyan tribe in Mindoro Oriental who is now set to fulfill his dream of becoming a teacher and help his community after recently passing the Licensure Exam for Teachers (LET).
In a recent post on Instagram, Kapuso broadcast journalist Kara David proudly shared that one of the scholars of the Project Malasakit named Patrick Reyes passed the LET.
According to Kara David, she met Patrick several years ago from a documentary shoot about the Mangyan tribe and even at a young age, the boy has dreamed of becoming a teacher someday so that he can help improve the lives of the people in their community.
“I met Patrick many years ago when I did a documentary on the indigenous peoples of Mindoro, the Mangyan tribe. Patrick comes from a very poor Mangyan family. He is a hardworking young man who dreams of becoming a teacher to help spread the gift of education to his community,” says the post.
The Kapuso broadcast journalist also went on to thank the donors who continuously support her Project Malasakit scholarship program.
“Salamat sa lahat ng donors at higit sa lahat, salamat sa Panginoon sa biyaya ng malasakit.”
Kara David established ‘Project Malasakit’ in 2002, which is a scholarship project that helps children who want to pursue their studies but are less capable.
Their mission is to bridge the gap between Filipinos who want to help and Filipino children who need to be helped by means of donations that they used to support children’s education from elementary to college.
Project Malasakit’s first scholar, Myra Demillo is also a Mangyan who lived in a remote mountain community in Mindoro Oriental. She graduated from college in 2006, and now has her own computer and cell phone repair shop and is supporting the education of her siblings.
