Throwback: Charlene Gonzales Witty Answer in 1994 Miss Universe Q&A

Who could forget Charlene Gonzalez’ excellent display of wit that wowed and made the Filipino crowd go wild? “Q and A” portion are definitely one of the most awaited parts of a beauty pageant, this portion measures the intelligence and mindset of a candidate.

Recently on the Facebook page “Memories of Old Manila” they shared a glimpse of Charlene’s answer to the prestigious Miss Universe in 1994, held at the Plenary Hall of the Philippine International Convention Center.



Fascinated by the many wonderful sites across the country that the contestants visited, the host asked Charlene how many islands are in the Philippines.

“We have been videotaping all over this country and if there’s one thing that I’ve learned, you guys have a bunch of islands here. How many islands are there in the Philippines?”

She then asked the host, “High tide or low tide?” before eventually saying that the country has 7,107 islands during low tide, and 7,108 during high tide.

Because of her witty answer, Charlene got an average score of “9.587.”

Unfortunately, she didn’t win the Miss Universe title, but she landed in the Top 6 Finalists and garnered two special awards that night: “Best in National Costume” and “Most Beautiful Hair.”

Although she was not able to win the Miss Universe title, Charlene made the Filipinos proud with her beauty and intelligence.

After the Miss Universe pageant, Charlene became active in TV and films. She hosted a dance reality show “Eezy Dancing” on ABC 5 from (now known as TV 5) and “Keep on Dancing,” “Feel at Home,” “At Home Ka Dito,” and “The Buzz” in ABS-CBN.



She had won the 18th and 19th PMPC Star Awards for Television as “Best Lifestyle Show Host” for her show, “At Home Ka Dito.”

She is also involved in various films such as “Ikaw ang Miss Universe ng buhay ko,” “Ikaw naman and iiyak,” “Kalabog en Bosyo,” “Ben Delubyo,” “Resbak, Babalikan kita,” and many more. Charlene also played the iconic role of “Dyesebel” in 1996.

Charlene was a pageant and showbiz royalty, she is the son of actor Bernard Bonnin and model Elvira Gonzales on 1 May 1974. Her mom Elvira was 1st runner up at the first Binibining Pilipinas pageant in 1964. Charlene also has a younger brother, actor Richard Bonnin and J.C. Bonnin who is now a pastor.

One of the major highlights of her life was her marriage with the multi-award winning Filipino actor and product endorser Aga Muhlach in 2001, they also had twins named Atasha and Andres that same year.
