24-year-old Cadet Jervis Allen Ramos, grew up in one of Metro Manila’s poorest districts in Tondo.
But this did not stop him from fulfilling his father’s dream and excelling in his studies as he is now set to graduate as the class valedictorian in this year’s Philippine National Police Academy (PNPA) Class.
“When I was young, he (his father) encouraged me to join the police. Maybe he wanted to pass on his dream to me,” he shared.
Jervis’ father passed away due to a liver disease when he was only 13 years old. Since then, his mother had to raise him and two more siblings in a small rented house and to make their ends meet, his mother sells pancit or palabok around their neighborhood.
Growing up in Tondo, where vice and crimes were on their street is not easy. But the determined student held on to his dream. He studied criminology at the Universidad de Manila. Jervis not only passed but he also ranked third in the Criminologist Board Exam in October 2014.
The determined cadet said that he turned his family’s difficult situation into a motivation to succeed. Right now, Jervis wanted to travel with his family to the beautiful places around the country and he also held on to a dream for his family,
“I would really like to buy my mother a house,” he said.
The 24-year-old cadet is set to graduate on March 22 in Silang, Cavite, where he will be awarded the top honor of his class, along with 200 other members of the Sansiklab Class, or the Sandigan ng Mamamayan na may Sigasig na Itaguyod ang Kapayapaan at Ipaglaban ang Bayan.
Joining him on the top 10 are 6 women cadets who will also be given plaques of merits.
He said that he now hopes to set a good example in the PNP by setting “the right character and (doing) public service will earn back (people’s) trust.”
