These men from Bangladesh risk their lives just to clean other people’s dirt and they don’t even complain that they were only paid about $8 for a day of diving into filth to claw out blockages just to make other people’s lives easier.

Dhaka is the capital and largest city of Bangladesh. This city is considered one of the largest and most densely populated cities in the world. Because of the population here, the city suffers from an inadequate drainage system and flooding due to heavy rains make the problem worse.

Recently, Dhaka city has been hit by major floods caused by heavy rains and an insufficient storm drainage system.

These poor sewage workers spend most of their time diving down into a hole of sludge with his bare hands, they are often surrounded by cockroaches and people’s dirt, but they were not provided with any protective gears to use.

The workers go deep into the hole holding their breath, knowing the danger that they could drown if caught in a sudden rush of sewage.

They were only provided with a long stick for safety and plunges into the hole without wearing shirts and without a mask and goggles to protect their face from the poisonous fumes that the sewage emits.

In fact, many workers passed away every year due to drowning and health problems as they swim through these filthy sewers.

However, for a sewage worker like Binod Lahot, being a sewer cleaner is the only job he has even if this is very dangerous.

“When I lift my hand to my mouth to take a bite of food, I feel like it smells of sewage. But I still eat it. Why? Because I have to stay alive and go back to work tomorrow,” Binod said.
