Just recently, photos of the newly cleaned Manila Bay surfaced on social media after the local government and volunteers teamed up to clean the harbour last January 27, 2019, as mandated by President Rodrigo Duterte, following the successful rehabilitation done with Boracay island.
That being said, video footage shared by Lorenz Tanjoco of “Radyo Pilipinas” on Facebook last January 28, 2019, has gone viral wherein a man can be seen patiently picking up remaining trash in the shores of Manila Bay and putting them in a winnowing basket.
In an interview with the video uploader, the man was identified as Christopher Abria. He was not able to join the clean-up drive the day before so he decided to do some cleaning the following day. According to him, he would do it for an entire afternoon to make up for not taking part in the extensive clean-up drive.
When asked if he was not having a hard time cleaning all by himself, he quickly answered:
“Walang mahirap, basta galing sa kalooban.”
Mang Chris further explained that he was doing it for his countrymen and so foreigners would see that the Philippines is a clean nation. He said he wouldn’t get tired of cleaning as long as he still sees trash in the shores of Manila Bay. He also clarified that he is in no way connected with the MMDA or the local government.
Mang Chris hopes that President Duterte’s dream for the dirty Manila Bay to be completely cleaned would come true. According to some officials of MMDA, he was able to collect several sacks of garbage from the seaside but he still couldn’t be stopped. Nonetheless, they were so impressed with Mang Chris’ initiative.
Likewise, netizens praised him for his willingness to help. Some even said that he is truly a kind person.
“Mabait talaga ‘yang si Kuya Chris, natulungan na ako niyan, isinauli niya ‘yung napulot niyang cellphone ko na naiwan ko sa parking lot ng MOA after ng isang fun run event, ibinalik niya thru sa isang radio station na siya namang nagtawag sa akin. Mabuti talaga ang kalooban ng taong iyan, dapat matulungan din natin siya,” one netizen said.
They hope that the cleanliness of Manila Bay would continue and that there would be more persons in the likes of Mang Chris.
