Filipino Sculptor Was Hailed as ‘King of Ice Carvings’ at a Competition Held in France

Filipinos are widely known not only for their hospitality and optimism amidst various crises but also for their amazing talents. It is something to be proud no matter where you are in the world.

Just recently, a Filipino named Rogel Cabisida has brought another pride to the entire country after winning the 28th Valloire International Ice Sculpture Competition that was held in France last January 15-18, 2019. The competition was joined by different countries such as France, Russia, Denmark, and Mexico.

46-year-old Cabisida was a native of Pete, Laguna but he is residing in Frace for 8 years now. According to him, he started carving at a very young age. He used to do his sculptures on wood, fruits and vegetables, chocolates, and even on butter! Finally, he grew an interest in ice carving when he began living in Western Europe.

According to Yahoo News, Cabisida bagged the title “King of Ice Carvings” after sculpting his amazing work of art on ice which he called “sitting.” His concept was very simple – a woman sitting on ice. However, the judges were rather stunned by his masterpiece.

“Nagustuhan ng judges kasi transparent ang yelo at walang crack kasi maganda ang temperature lalo sa gabi -12, -8 kaya na-maintain namin ang ganda ng yelo. Nag-stay kami hanggang 1 o’clock para kasi doon ang maganda ang yelo. Maganda magtrabaho kasi matigas tapos pwede kang magdikit ng yelo. Hindi siya matutumba kasi malamig,” narrated by the newly hailed “King of Ice Carvings”.

Despite being far from his home country, Cabisida said that he offers the honor to the art of the Philippines. It’s truly amazing how we never run out of amazing people who continuously bring merit to our motherland!
