It’s a deeply embedded social norm to receive gifts when you are the birthday celebrator, but for Manny Pacquiao, giving instead of being on the receiving end is the better way to go.
On his 40th birthday with a grand party for over a thousand guests at the KCC Mall of General Santos City, the eight-weight division world champion gave away 4 cars – a Ford Ranger pickup, a Toyota Vios, and 2 Suzuki DZire, 58 motorcycles, 24 40-inch LED TV and thousands of home appliances to his townmates.

Manny also gave away bags of groceries to around 4,000 of their city’s poor residents on the eve of his birthday. What a very generous man!

“Yes, automatic ‘yan [sharing your blessings]. ‘Pag binigyan ka ng blessings, hindi lang ‘yun para sa ‘yo kundi para mai-share mo sa ibang tao,” he said. “Masaya dahil kahit papaano, nakakatulong tayo sa kanila – ‘yung mga mahirap na tao. Alam mo, talagang siksikan sila. Pumila sila para magkaroon ng panghanda.”
It was considered the biggest birthday bash ever by his family and friends! His guest list included no less than President Duterte and other personalities in politics and show business.
The Filipino boxing icon is set for his first defense of the World Boxing Association welterweight crown against American Adrien Broner on January 19 (January 20 in the Philippines) at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Manny now resumes his training with his team which includes Roger “Haplas” Fernandez and Jonathan Peñalosa and will then fly to Los Angeles where the second phase of the training will be held at the Wild Card Gym of the former chief trainer and newly designated consultant Freddie Roach in Hollywood.
According to his assistant trainer, Nonoy Neri, playing basketball consistently is a key factor in his strength and stamina. Knowing that it’s taking his body longer to recuperate from the rigors of training, however, Manny won’t allow pain, exhaustion, and burnout to set in.
