Another Filipina has yet again brought pride to the country. The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) announced in a Facebook post that mountaineer Carina Dayondon has completed the Seven Summits climb.
She is the first Filipina to finish the task of climbing the seven highest mountains in seven continents and is second to Romi Garduce who finished it last 2012. Carina conquered the seven highest mountains namely:
Mount Denali in North America (2006), Mount Everest in Asia (2007), Mount Elbrus in Europe (2013), Mount Kosciuszko in Australia (2014), Mount Kilimanjaro in Africa (2015), Mount Aconcagua in South America (2018) and Mount Vinson Massif in Antartica (2018).
The Seven Summits is the mountaineering challenge in the world. Carina just joined her name on the elite list of mountaineers. Her teammate from the “Balangay Voyage” named Fung Yu stated that he received a satellite phone call from Carina. She told Fung Yu that she successfully reached the Mt. Vinson summit last December 16.
She also requested to inform her family that she was okay and also inquired about her dogs. “She has descended from the summit and that her climb was a success. Carina also wanted her family to know she is safe.
She also asked about her dogs,” Fung said. Reportedly, the 39-year-old Filipina mountaineer from the highland province of Bukidnon started her fondness in mountain climbing after she joined the school-based mountaineering club.
In the year 2001, she then became a part of the National Sports climbing team. Carina then joined several adventure races including paddling, running/hiking, biking, kayaking, and land navigation for 3 to 4 days.
During those adventure races, Carina was discovered by an organizer and gave her the privilege to join the Philippine Mt. Everest Team. Aside from being an adventurer, Carina is also a Lieutenant Junior Grade Officer in PCG.
