Doctors in China have revealed that they have operated and removed 420 kidney stones from a man’s body, who has been excessively eating tofu for years.
Mr. He from Zhejiang Province in Eastern China checked into the Dongyang People’s Hospital and complained that he has been experiencing intense pain in his abdomen last month.
Doctors found out that his left kidney was packed full of stones, most of them tiny.
Mr. He shared that he first suffered from kidney stones 20 years ago and was treated with lithotripsy, which is a procedure that uses shock waves to break the stones in the kidney bladder until they are small enough so they can be passed out in urine.
According to the attending surgeon, Zhou Changchun, “I have worked as a doctor for 30 years and have never seen so many stones.”
The Doctors at the hospital concluded that this is due to his tofu-heavy diet, and a lack of water intake. According to Dr. Wei Yubin, “Soy products, especially gypsum tofu, are very high in calcium, the excess of which cannot be excreted from the body without a sufficient intake of water.”
Kidney stones (medical name nephrolithiasis) are quite common, and usually, affect people aged 30 to 60 years. It is known as renal colic if the stones cause severe pain. Most kidney stones are small enough, between 4 and 5mm in diameter, to be passed easily.
According to the NHS, renal colic affects an estimated 10 to 20 percent of men and three to 5 percent of women.
The doctors took almost two hours to remove all the stones and finished the operation.
According to the chief surgeon, the kidney would have stopped working if it was delayed any longer. Good thing, Mr. He decided to seek medical attention before it happened.
“We spent 45 minutes just taking out the tiny stones,” according to Dr. Wei. “After the operation, my hands and legs were both numb.”
After his operation, Mr. He took his stones home with him placed in a plastic bag.
